A Light in the Library
My role in production this semester was as a band member in the music pod. My individual responsibilities were to practice my songs as well as work with other students to make a better version of the song we were working on.
Working with other people had to be the most challenging part of this production. I have found that working with other people towards a common goal can be very rewarding but can also cause a lot of struggle. I had to work on who would get what parts for the song “Don’t You Forget About Me” and I was feeling selfish and took all the parts for myself.
I think that every time we have a production, I learn a little bit more about working with other people and how to be patient, assertive, and calm. Each time I work with a new group of people, I make new friends and work with people who frustrate me. Sometimes they’re the same people, so working to be compassionate about how other people are feeling has helped me a lot to be successful in the groups I’m working with.
Last semester, I was put into a leadership role, and that taught me how to help people and work collaboratively while taking charge of the situation. This time, I was not put into a leadership role, and had to follow other people’s lead. I don’t like being told what to do so that was kind of a challenge for me. So, I think that this semester was a good learning experience for me to learn how to listen and follow directions. I think that successfully following directions is a good skill to have when you go into the working world, and I think this semester took that a step further.
My work ethic was good. No one complained that I wasn’t doing anything, so I think I deserve an A. My productivity was pretty good. I didn’t end up being put on very many songs, but I worked hard to be productive, so I deserve an A. My collaboration was pretty good. I worked with other people as much as possible, but I did feel out of my element for a while. So I’ll give myself a B. My communication was pretty good. I was nice most of the time and talked about things I needed to talk about so I deserve an A. My independent initiative was okay. I was nervous about messing up, and I wasn’t as confident since I hadn’t performed in a while, so I deserve a B.
If I were working, I would be given a raise, because I put a lot of effort into my work, and I don’t give up easily. I would have worked to the best of my ability. This experience sparked old interests. I used to sing and perform a lot when I was younger, and it gave me new inspiration to perform more often. I think I am pretty okay at singing. I wouldn’t say I’m really good at it. I did not think I would be performing again, but I am glad I did.
