Mural Internship Reflection
For my internship, I worked with five other girls to create a mural with our mentor, Melissa Jones. We all worked together to make a unified piece of art. Each of us took turns edging and blending during the first part of the process so that it would not look as though one person had done one whole section. During the second part of our process, we laid in tree bases. It was an exciting beginning to our painting. The third part involved shadow and light, where we pushed our darks and blended them smoothly as shadow. The last part involved us painting flowers and adding detail to them. I chose this internship because I love painting, and I thought it would add to my skills significantly if I had more experience painting.
Ms. Jones helped to lead us and teach us skills in using paints as well as working together and being able to critique our own work in a healthy way. She showed us the proper way to blend and mix paints and how to put a drawing to scale. She worked on many sets in Hollywood as a designer and maker. She is skilled in using paints and many other mediums.
There were issues with the texture of the wall. It textured changed from being smooth to being quite bumpy and difficult. In contrast, the other part of the wall was very smooth which made for a good learning experience in blending without making it look streaky. I also had to battle with the cold weather. We began this project during the winter, which made for very cold mornings. The challenges I faced made me stronger and learn how to push past my struggles. I used the paintbrush to push the paints deeper into the crevices of the bumpy wall, and put on a much warmer jacket.
I did not have an exceptional amount of personal growth through this process. It was a great experience, and I learned a lot through it, but it was not a life changing event. I would say the thing that changed about me the most was my level of skill in painting. I learned a lot about layering and using washes to change the tone of color. I gained friends as well, and learned about getting along with other people who may have different interests than me.
I have discovered an interest in set design through Nueva. In addition, this experience has taught me more about understanding how to use paint in an effective way. Using paints would most likely be a part of designing and creating sets, if that is something I end up doing.
This was the type of internship I expected, however next time, I think that I will choose a different type of career study. I knew I was good at painting, and I am glad that I got more experience in doing it. I learned a lot of skills about painting, such as water washes, layering, texture, shadow, and light. I could see myself doing something similar to this in the future, and I hope that I will get to.
